What's Your New Year's Resolution? – Make Your Health a Priority

As the year winds down, many of us are thinking about making new year’s resolutions to improve aspects of our lives. For many people the new year is a time to adopt a healthier lifestyle like completely cutting out those late night pizza calls or maybe starting that gym membership you’ve always wanted to. There is no better time than the start of a new year to better yourself in some way.

Unfortunately, statistics say that most of us aren’t great at keeping our resolutions. In North America the self-reported new year resolution success rate for people in their 20s is 39 per cent. As the age goes up this number goes way down. Folks over the age of 50 only follow through with their resolutions 14 per cent of the time. We all have the best intentions when making our resolutions every year hoping for positive changes, so why is the success rate to follow through with them so low?

One key ingredient to success is understanding how realistic the resolution is. Keep your resolutions simple to achieve success in the long run. When high targets are set right away it is unrealistic to achieve in a short period of time. It is all about creating a habit every day that is simple and easy to follow. For example, if your resolution is to start losing weight, planning to go to the gym every morning at 6:30 am may not be so easy to follow. Setting up a more reasonable plan to go twice a week for a start and ease your way to going every day can be more achievable.

That being said, when you have a medication therapy you find hard to manage it can be even more difficult to stick to this new year’s resolution to improve your adherence. Let’s say you’re a busy working parent with a 12-hour shift at the hospital and four kids to get to school every morning. On top of this you have to worry about dinner, bills and your medications to take every day. Life will always get busy and sticking to a resolution to improve your medication management may not be realistic without a tool to help you.
